As per reports, a 13 year old Jain girl died after completing a ritual known as ‘Chaumasa’ in which she fasted for 64 days at a stretch. She did this ritual to bring profit to his father’s jewellery business on a priest’s recommendation.
After she completed her fast on October 1, she went on liquid diet for 2 days, but on the third day she was taken to a hospital after her blood pressure plunged and was declared dead due to cardiac arrest.
Balala Hakkula Sangham a child rights NGO had written to the Police Commissioner of Hyderabad looking for an enquiry in this case, as they allege that the girl was forced to undertake the fast by elders of the community.
Achuta Rao, girl’s father says that she had fasted earlier too, but this time her body acted differently.
