According to tax officials, an Aam Aadmi Party lawmaker in Delhi reportedly holds 130 crores of assets that he cannot account for.
Kartar Singh, 54, is a property dealer who represents the Mehrauli constituency of South Delhi.
Last month, Singh’s homes and offices were raided by income tax officials, who allege that they uncovered documents that prove the Aam Aadmi Party leader owns large farmhouses and benami or proxy-owned properties through his associates.
Tax department sources said that what they have found suggests that Mr Singh set up over a dozen fake or shell companies to invest in these homes, some of which are shown as owned by his associates.
Mr Singh was reportedly unable to explain how much he paid for the farmhouse that he lives in which covers 2.6 acres in South Delhi.
After the raids, leaders from Mr Singh’s party jumped to his defence, claiming that he is being framed by investigating agencies acting on behalf of a vindictive central government.
