India beat Ireland 3-2 in the opening encounter of Olympics. Raghunath’s goal and Rupinder’s brace helped register the win in their opening match of the men’s hockey competition, on Saturday.
VR Raghunath scored a goal in the 15th minute while Rupinder scored in the 27th and 49th minute of the game. India managed to just convert three out of seven penalty corners India.
On the same hand, Ireland in the end made it a not-a-piece-of-cake for India in the second half. Ireland were successful in finding the net twice with the sticks of Jermyn John in 45th minute and Conor Harte in the 56th minute.
Indian players looked aggressive in the three quarters but as soon the first goal was struck by the Irish side, India defence looked under pressure and therefore conceded four penalty corners, in which the third was converted by the Irish players.
After today’s performance, India will be in pressure for their next game against Germany on August 8.
