Jostling at INS Hamla; recruitment to continue with Bandobast: Defense Ministry

Failing to control the large crowd appeared for recruitment of the Senior Secondary Recruits (SSR) at INS Hamla (Mumbai), many of the candidates were injured in the stampede on Thursday. However, Defense Ministry claimed only two were injured who are undergoing treatment at Naval Hospital.

In the official communique’ of Defense Ministry, it was said that the adequate arrangements for crowd control have also been made in liaison with Mumbai Police. However, due to some over-enthusiastic candidates desiring to enter the premises before the others, crowding resulted at the main gate of INS Hamla, which was controlled by Civil and Naval Police present at the site. Two candidates received minor injuries in this jostling at the main gate and were treated at the Naval Hospital at INS Hamla.

Notably, the Indian Navy was conducting a Special Recruitment Drive for Senior Secondary Recruits (SSR) at INS Hamla, Malad, Mumbai on Thursday. Due to the overwhelming response, a very large number of candidates have reported for the said drive.

The examination is currently in progress in shifts, and will continue till all eligible candidates with valid documents have been examined. The Ministry has clarified that there has been no change in the minimum educational qualifications etc, and all the volunteers (with valid documents) will get a chance to appear for the recruitment opportunity.
