Leaders shut down Sharmila Kanba Lup after Irom ends hunger strike

Irom Sharmila’s decision to end her 16 year old hunger strike against AFSPA was not much welcomed by Manipur, even the organization Sharmila Kanba Lup (Save Sharmila Campaign) was dissolved but the leaders pledge to continue their fight against Draconian law AFSPA on their individual capacity.

After holding a meet with Irom Sharmila for an hour, the leaders of the organisation decided to dissolve it. They pulled down one of the banners carrying Sharmila’s photo at its office located at Porompat, Imphal East to mark end of the organization. Talking to reporters, Momon said, the Lup was formed to support Sharmila in her struggle to get AFSPA repealed.

Not happy with Sharmila’s decision to enter politics, Momon said as she has decided to enter electoral politics, being apolitical in nature the organisation cannot support any more. Following which we have decided to dissolve LUP. However the members of LUP would continue their fight against AFSPA. The delegation went to meet Sharmila to confirm her stance of contesting the election.

Sharmila spoke to Imphal Free Press (IFP) that the Lup members came to meet her and asked about her stance on entering politics. “I told them that they should dissolve it and carry on the fight in their own individual capacities, now it is time for organizations and individuals to rally and come together for a common cause”.
