Political parties can’t use public funds for their self-promotion: EC

The Election Commission on Friday said Political parties cannot use public funds to promote their party or its logo.

Political parties often use large sum of money from public funds for their advertisement. While hearing a plea to cancel Bahujan Samaj Party’s election symbol ‘Elephant’ because of the misuse done by the party using public funds, Delhi High Court had asked EC to set guidelines related to use of public funds by political parties for their promotion.

EC on Friday said, “The Commission is of the view that utilizing public funds/public place for promoting any political party or propagating its election symbol would be antithetical to the concept of free and fair election and the principle of level playing field for all stakeholders.”

Most of the political parties have agreed on this issue.
