National Green Tribunal ( NGT) on Monday slammed Himachal Pradesh executives by saying, “The time is not far when people would have to carry Oxygen cylinders”. Comment was made when cleaning of a forest area for a road project was being done.
A bench headed by NGT leader Swatantra Kumar expressed concern over the environmental damage and also said ” Half country is facing floods and half experiencing droughts. Shimla’s temperature is rising. Show us where you’ve planted a tree, will the road give us oxygen? Trees give us oxygen .” The bench said, ” People are sick. The time is not far when people would have to carry oxygen cylinders.” The bench said that the crucial issue is ‘ no one concerned.’ Officers were failed to show us such a picture where the trees were planted.
When the advocate on behalf of the state told the bench that project is of national importance so bench said, “we have seen what is in national interest. First plant 1 lakh tress, then come to us.” Bench will listen this case on 11th august.
Earlier Tribunal took cognizance in the case of cutting trees from Shoghi to Parwanoo in Himachal Pradesh.
NGT issued affidavit to the Conservator of Forests regarding the deducted number of trees in the area, and had also directed the state government and NHAI to submit its report on the issue.
